    Hybrid Rye for Sows

Hybrid Rye for Sows

Recommended inclusion of hybrid rye for sows is between 25-50% of their diet, depending on their energy and fibre needs and stage of production.

Research has shown successful hybrid rye replacement of corn (50% hybrid rye in the ration) in diets for gestating and lactating sows, as well as barley and wheat in gestation (60% inclusion) and lactation (35% inclusion) rations while maintaining sow reproductive performance as well as the growth of their offspring.

Due to the high-quality, soluble fibre content and low glycemic index of hybrid rye, sows have been shown to be less aggressive in open pen gestation and are calmer around the time of farrowing, leading to reduced pre-wean mortality rates. Improved litter growth rates have been observed in some research trials, indicating improved milk production and translating to a reduction in low vitality piglet deaths, higher numbers of pigs weaned and increased average daily gains of piglets while suckling.

Functional Attributes of Hybrid Rye for Sows

  • Excellent nutritional profile to drive reproduction and milk production
  • Increased satiety due to a low glycemic index (slow release of glucose into the bloodstream) and bulk fibre, perfect for gestating sows
  • Calmer sows leading to reductions in aggressive interactions in open pen gestation and decreased preweaning mortality
  • Increased dietary fibre helps relieve constipation at farrowing
  • High fibre gestation diets can increase feed intake during lactation, helping to maximize milk production and litter performance
