Groundkeeper Management

What are groundkeepers?

Volunteers from whole beet or parts of beet remaining on the field after harvest, which can flower and potentially set seed in the following crop.

Preventing groundkeeper appearance:

Beet sowing: create level seedbed for even beet emergence & homogenous plant stand.

Beet harvest: timely harvest with optimal harvest quality and minimized losses.

After harvest:

  • If frosts are expected during winter: shallow soil cultivation to expose remaining beets to frosts & natural predation. Remaining groundkeepers can be removed mechanically before establishment.
  • Mild winters: use inversive tillage (ploughing) to bury remaining beets & beet parts.

Prevent seed return from groundkeepers! Control with ALS herbicides is not possible!

5 facts to keep in mind

  • CONVISO® SMART groundkeepers need to be monitored and need to be managed to ensure the longevity of the system.

  • Keep an eye on storage sites (clamps) – there might be higher occurrence of groundkeepers in spring.

  • A competitive crop (dense canopy – strong suppression) supports groundkeeper control.

  • Synthetic auxins (4) & Inhibition of Hydroxyphenyl Pyruvate Dioxygenase (27) will have a good effect: favorable growth conditions & sufficient leaf area needed.

  • Manual removal might be necessary – if chemical control is not sufficient.
