If you’re choosing a wheat to follow roots or vegetables, KWS Fowlmere combines later-drilling flexibility, very early maturity and excellent grain quality.

It’s particularly well suited to light land and also offers an option for growers planning to follow wheat with oilseed rape.

Flexibility after roots and vegetables

Following sugar beet, potatoes or vegetables, field availability often dictates drilling date. With its optimum sowing window extending through to the end of December, Fowlmere gives you flexibility as and when fields become available.

Its strong autumn vigour and high tillering capacity sets the foundations for high performance in the later-drilling position, while very early maturity (-2) avoids harvest dates being pushed back too far.

In addition, Fowlmere’s suitability for light land makes it particularly appealing to root and vegetable rotations across the East, with the variety yielding 106% on light soils (AHDB RL 2026/27).

Using KWS Fowlmere as an entry to oilseed rape

"As the earliest maturing wheat on the list, Fowlmere is a great alternative to barley as an entry to oilseed rape," says KWS Wheat Product Manager, Olivia Bacon.

"Its -2 ripening rating allows growers to combine significantly earlier than many standard wheat varieties, giving an extended drilling window for OSR, allowing growers to target optimal planting conditions.

This means that crops have more time to get established before CSFB migration which typically peaks at the end of August."

Olivia Bacon says it also brings critical risk management advantages too. "The true value of KWS Fowlmere will not have been seen in 2026 as all varieties matured very quickly. However, with extreme weather patterns becoming more common, having a range of maturity dates to balance risk is likely to become increasingly valuable."

We chose KWS Fowlmere for our portfolio this year because it genuinely offers growers something different. Its -2 maturity rating really stood out to me, giving farmers a valuable way to spread harvest workload. That unique maturity factor makes it a clear point of difference.
