KWS Traits – Overcoming tomorrow’s challenges today.

To ensure sustainable and profitable agriculture, genetics play a key role. Our KWS plant breeders continuously work on developing strong and healthy varieties that deliver higher yields with lower input. As a result, we have developed a diverse portfolio of winter oilseed rape varieties that achieve high yields under a wide range of conditions and are resilient to diseases and pests. These include, for example, our varieties featuring InsectPROTECT.
These specific characteristics of a plant are known as traits. A trait provides farmers with a solution to a specific challenge – such as drought, frost, or pest pressure. Through the targeted selection and breeding of traits, we develop oilseed rape varieties that offer a measurable advantage when such challenges occur.

InsectPROTECT – Faster than the challenges!

Protecting your crop from cabbage stem flea beetle starts with the right variety choice. Winter oilseed rape varieties differ significantly in their susceptibility to cabbage stem flea beetle larvae – and this is exactly where InsectPROTECT comes in. Varieties with InsectPROTECT are specifically bred for reduced larval damage. The result: stronger plants, lower larval pressure, and a more secure establishment phase.

PhomaPROTECT – Resistance powered by breeding expertise.

Phoma is one of the most significant fungal diseases in oilseed rape, affecting leaves, the root collar, and stems. Under high infection pressure, it can lead to considerable yield losses. PhomaPROTECT varieties feature strong genetic resistance – including the modern LepR1 gene – ensuring plant health and performance even in challenging seasons.

ClubrootPROTECT – Resistance with genetic depth.

Clubroot is one of the most persistent threats to oilseed rape. The disease causes root galls, which restrict water and nutrient uptake and can lead to significant yield losses. As traditional resistance is becoming less effective in many regions, new genetic solutions are required.

The PBR1 resistance gene broadens the spectrum of resistance and strengthens the plants’ resilience even in heavily infested soils, as confirmed by official trials in Germany and France. ClubrootPROTECT varieties combine this resistance with proven genetics, thereby offering long-lasting protection against a pathogen that can survive in the soil for decades.

N-ADAPT – Bred for performance, even under uncertain conditions.

Nitrogen availability is increasingly influenced by weather conditions and regulatory requirements. N-ADAPT varieties use nitrogen particularly efficiently and deliver high yields even under reduced fertilisation. Only varieties that show a maximum yield reduction of 5% at a 75% fertilisation level are awarded the N-ADAPT label.
