Milestone Anniversary Exhibition: 25 Years of “Kunst im BiT” – A Retrospective 1999 – 2024

Einbeck, 06.10.2025

It all began a quarter of a century ago with a simple idea: the empty walls of the newly constructed Biotechnikum (BiT) should be brought to life. In addition to the concept of giving new artists the opportunity to exhibit their work every four to five months, the transparent research building was intended to offer scientists the chance to engage with art – as a source of inspiration, a stimulus for reflection, and a prompt for a change in perspective. Since 1999, a total of 66 exhibitions by regional and international artists have been shown as part of the “Kunst im BiT” series.

Painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, and installation art found their way to Einbeck and invited viewers to spark discussions, exchange opinions, and embrace new ideas. The vernissages and guided tours quite literally opened the doors to the interested public. Through the medium of art, a dialogue emerged.

Now, in a retrospective, works from all exhibitions between 1999 and 2024 are on display. The anniversary exhibition is both a milestone and a reflection on 25 years of art at KWS. The chronological exhibition path runs through the two buildings – the Biotechnikum and the adjacent office and institute building – connected by a glass bridge.

“We look back on a time full of creative impulses, exciting shifts in perspective, and intense encounters between art and science, art and agriculture, and art and our everyday work,” said KWS spokesperson Dr. Felix Büchting at the opening of the anniversary exhibition. “KWS has a long-standing connection to art: my grandfather Carl-Ernst Büchting maintained a close friendship with art patron Bernhard Sprengel. This relationship laid the foundation for KWS’s appreciation of contemporary art – an attitude that continues to this day.” With the opening of the Biotechnikum in 1999, not only was an innovative research facility created, but thanks to the initiative and

commitment of his father Andreas Büchting, a space for art, culture, and creativity was also established, said Felix Büchting.

At KWS, art is a visible sign of a vibrant, creative, and innovative corporate culture. All artists who exhibited at the Biotechnikum over the past 25 years were invited to a preview before the official opening of the anniversary exhibition – as a gesture of gratitude, recognition, and appreciation. Also present were several curators and contributors who have supported and shaped “Kunst im BiT” with great dedication and expertise. “The artists enriched the space with their works and ideas, turning it into a lively meeting place for art and dialogue. Some of their works have remained at KWS – as lasting memories and as inspiration for our daily lives,” said Dr. Felix Büchting at the vernissage.

After the anniversary, a new chapter begins: the “Art Lounge by KWS” in downtown Einbeck will be the future exhibition venue for art at KWS. Alongside emerging young talents, established artistic positions will also be presented. Vernissages, finissages, and artist talks will regularly invite the public to engage – open to all who wish to be inspired. The KWS art collection will continue to grow and keep the permanent displays on campus, in the Biotechnikum, and at other locations vibrant. Art at KWS stands for curiosity, creativity, and openness – values that also shape research. It creates spaces for reflection and brings people together. In a world that is constantly changing, art remains a resonant space for new ideas.

A book has been published to accompany the anniversary exhibition, documenting the history of the project with texts, images, and background information. It is available at the “Art Lounge by KWS” at Tiedexer Straße 20. Opening hours: Thursdays and Fridays from 3 to 6 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.

On Saturday, November 22, 2025, visitors will once again have the opportunity to view the retrospective from 1 to 3 p.m.
