KWS Corn Breeding in Europe

At KWS, we’ve been breeding corn for Europe for over 70 years, today, having a portfolio of more than 268 varieties that deliver reliable results across the continent. Beyond the traditional breeding goals of improved yield and disease tolerance, our breeders are constantly pushing the limits for both grain and silage corn. We innovate by also breeding for drought tolerance, lower input requirements, and improved feed values. This ensures that corn remains a sustainable option for European farmers in the face of changing climatic conditions and an evolving regulatory landscape.

Breeding Corn in Europe for Europe means we are applying the most modern breeding technologies allowed under the European legislation as well as having a vast network for trials across the diverse climatic conditions in 17 European countries. This is what makes our breeding unique: Our focus on regional adaption of very different climatic conditions across a small continent. E.g., particularly for areas frequently affected by drought, such as Southeastern Europe, KWS has developed innovative, drought-tolerant corn varieties under the ClimaCONTROL3 label. KWS works closely with farmers (e.g., through field trials, training programs, and sustainability initiatives) and partners with research institutions and universities to optimize corn varieties for local needs and to remain at the forefront of agricultural innovation.

Did you know it takes 8 years to develop just one variety ready for commercialization? Our trial network spans multiple European countries, running hundreds of trials annually to test corn varieties under diverse conditions. These trials encompass various stages of the breeding process, from early-generation selections to advanced yield trials. The extensive scope and scale of these trials enable us to gather comprehensive data on the performance, resilience, and productivity of KWS corn varieties.

We have a vast network for trials across the diverse climatic and soil conditions, from the cooler, wetter conditions in Northern Europe to the hotter, drier climates in Southern and Eastern Europe. Detailed information about country-specific products and local consultants can be found on the separate country pages listed in the table below.

Breeding has become increasingly complex, not only aiming for high yield potential but also prioritizing yield stability. The growing environments are evolving much faster with changes in climate, water, and nutrient availability, along with necessary disease tolerances.

EnergyBOOST: Exceptional quality and energy yield

The EnergyBOOST corn varieties are KWS’ superior hybrids for dairy feeding. They deliver exceptional starch and energy yields, and boost the energy contents in the feeding mix. Since starch is an essential energy source for high milk output, these varieties are the “energy boost for milk production”. On top of this, some of our EnergyBOOST varieties show an improved stover digestibility, pushing the feed value even further.

#EXPECTMORE from KWS Grain Corn Varieties

KWS´ improved product performance in grain corn and closes the gap between performance and customer perception.

Drought tolerance & ClimaCONTROL3

Under the ClimaCONTROL3 label, KWS offers innovative, drought-tolerant grain corn varieties that derive from a dedicated research and breeding program. The number three in the name stands for the fact that drought stress can have three different impacts on plants depending on the respective growth phase: Before, during or after flowering.

Maximum yield & Plus4GRAIN

This program delivers a variety offer to farmers, aiming on optimized response to inputs of intensification, that a farmer can provide to his corn crop. In a large network that covers areas from continental to maritime environments, KWS evaluates the behavior under high yield management. A Plus4GRAIN hybrid will have more power to add more yield, in optimized environments where general yield levels significantly exceed 10 tons per hectare, than a set of commonly grown hybrids, of comparable maturity.

Reduction of CO2 emissions & DryDown+

KWS' DryDown+ grain corn varieties are characterized by a superior dry-down capacity (drying capacity). Internal trials show that the reduction of the crop moisture from 30 to 20 percent at harvest can reduce the necessary drying costs by up to 50 percent. The long-term breeding goal is a grain moisture level of a maximum of 15% at harvest to eliminate the need of drying at all – and also enabling a significant reduction of energy use and CO2 emissions during the drying cycles.
