MORE Security with ClimaCONTROL3
Climate change represents a major challenge for agricultural production due to the increasing presence of high temperatures, longer periods of drought and other unfavorable weather conditions every year. But now, you can be ready to face that challenge!
The company KWS continuously improves the genetic quality of corn hybrids. Within the KWS lineage pools, we identify genes that contribute to stress tolerance.
To bring you our best solutions, hundreds of test sites have been set up across Europe. Also, four drought platforms were built to test drought stress at different stages of the life cycle.
What is our solution?
ClimaCONTROL3 is a special group of hybrids that is tolerant to stressful conditions.
ClimaCONTROL3
3 stands for three growth phases in which drought stress can have different effects on plants: before, during and after flowering.
In each of there three phases, the corn plant needs very specific properties to reduce the damage caused by drought - and that is exactly what KWS achieved.
MORE heat and drought tolerance.
Profit from stable yields using our highly drought-tolerant hybrids
Find out more about each of the 3 phases:
1. Before flowering
In the development phase of corn from the seventh to the tenth leaf, the beginnings of male and female flowers, that is, the tassel and the ear, are formed. If any stress occurs during this period, the effect of that stress will be visible on the ear (number of grain rows and number of grains per row) and on the tassel (number and quality of anthers). If they find themselves in stressful conditions during the flowering phase, ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids have the ability to form the beginnings of a significant number of fertile flowers on the ear, as well as the number and fertility of anthers on the tassel. Additionally, under conditions of strong herbicide application, low or high temperatures, ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids successfully achieve their potential, primarily through rapid initial growth, the development of above-ground plant parts and the root system, as well as stable and consistent development of generative organs.
2. During flowering
Flowering is the period of greatest water consumption by the plant, because the plant needs to complete vegetative growth, produce enough pollen, develop silk, and form the beginnings of the kernels. The appearance and opening of anthers and then pollen release, and even more so the elongation of silk, affects the increase in water consumption of each individual plant. ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids flower in a very short period with synchronized pollination and silking. There is no formation of a second ear that prolongs flowering and increases water consumption. Early flowering can contribute to more efficient fertilization, when soil water is more accessible and the risk of drought is lower.
Pollination must constantly function even when there is no wind. ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids have a tassel that fully develops from the topmost leaf on the plant during flowering. Assimilation, every CO2 intake affects an increase in water consumption. ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids perform gas exchange very efficiently through effective stomatal control, keeping them tightly closed during the hottest hours of the day, and active in the morning hours when temperatures are lowest.
3. After flowering
The formation of starch in the grain requires CO2 assimilation. The staygreen trait allows for longer physiological activity of the leaves around the ear and longer and more efficient grain filling all the way to physiological maturity. ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids have a pronounced staygreen trait, from flowering to the formation of the black layer in the grain. Grain filling must begin shortly after fertilization. ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids do not waste time and start grain filling immediately after fertilization. Moisture losses from the ear during this process must be minimized. ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids have ears covered with husks, which open at the stage of black layer formation in the grain. If there is a lack of moisture at this stage, the grain weight as the final yield component may be reduced. ClimaCONTROL3 hybrids, under stressful conditions as well as under stress-free production conditions, show smaller fluctuations in grain weight.
Drought Guide
But the secret lies in a holistic approach, so we offer education and support. And, in the end, all of this will help the crops, increase profit, and save the season. But what is most important to us is that it will give farmers something to rely on, especially when drought comes.
That’s why our new generation of corn hybrids isn’t just about higher performance. It’s about delivering #MORE
