The next level of barley is hybrid

Hybrid Barley by KWS
Experience the full potential of hybridization

Breeding innovation paves the way for sustainable growth in agriculture.

Are you ready for an exciting new solution that takes barley to the next level? With one of our KWS key values foresight, we are looking ahead to provide farmers with more versatile cropping options. That's why we are expanding our barley breeding portfolio to hybrid barley. By combining our deep expertise in barley breeding with forward-thinking innovation, we are responding to the evolving challenges like climate change, which demands the need for higher yields, greater resilience, and enhanced weed suppression.

The three main hybrid barley benefits

Benefit: Higher yield

With a higher yield potential compared to conventional varieties, hybrid barley transforms every hectare into next-level productivity. Its exceptional hybrid vigour drives early growth, produces a greater number of tillers, and uses the available resource of water and nutrients efficiently.

The results: Bigger, fuller ears. More uniform, robust plants. A crop built for consistently high output.

Benefit: Enhanced weed suppression

Hybrid barley brings a competitive edge to the field - the ability to outcompete and limit the growth of weeds. Due to strong hybrid vigour, hybrid barley drives rapid spring establishment, allowing the plants to cover the soil surface early and produce a higher number of tillers. This leaves fewer resources available for weeds to thrive and reduces both their biomass and reproductive capacity.

The results: Deeply developed root system. A dense, highly competitive canopy. A cereal crop which suppresses weeds before they gain a foothold.

Benefit: Greater resilience

By combining the most valuable traits of two parent lines, hybrid barley delivers exceptional adaptability across a wide range of growing conditions. Its powerful, expanded root system reaches deeper and wider, capturing nutrients with remarkable efficiency, directly accessing water from the soil, and anchoring the crop with unwavering stability.

The results: Uniform plant development under variable field conditions, the ability to recover and compensate for stand gaps. A crop built for resilience, designed for performance.

How does the hybrid barley breeding process look like?

The aim of hybrid breeding is to produce high-yielding and agronomically well adapted hybrids. These are created by crossing two inbred lines that combine well with each other. To develop the best-performing hybrids, we need to find the best-performing combinations from pool A and pool B. For that, breeders of hybrid plants use genetically divergent pools. Pool A, for example, contains mother lines that guarantee disease resistance to a specific disease, while pool B contains father lines that have good grain quality. To keep on improving these lines for the desired traits in the hybrids, lines from the respective pool (i.e. A × A and B × B) are constantly crossed with each other.
