How to implement Integrated Weed Management measures in practice?

Rotation is everything!

Chemical

Use different herbicides with different modes of action*.
Maximize herbicide efficacy with:
- full dose rate
- correct application timing
- optimal application conditions
Avoid overusing other ALS-inhibitors in your crop rotation after SMART sugarbeet.
Support your IWM with a non-ALS herbicide as a mixing partner or in a sequence.

*Mode of action = way in which herbicides control weeds

Cultural

Keep your crop rotation diverse by integrating winter and spring crops.
Use cover crops to reduce weed pressure, fix nitrogen and reduce nematode pressure.
Keep your crop competitive by ensuring good crop establishment.

It is not the rotation of products that is important, but the rotation of their modes of action.

Keep your fields productive with a diverse rotation strategy. The following graphic gives you an example for a SMART herbicide and crop rotation in your field. Each herbicide mode of action and its respective HRAC code** is represented by a different color – the more colorful, the more sustainable is your herbicide strategy.

** Based on their mode of action, herbicides are classified by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC) into HRAC groups. The HRAC code system was changed from letters to numbers in 2020. Both classifications are shown in the graphic.

There is more than rotation!

Mechanical

Maximize the use of different mechanical weed control measures in the crop rotation.
Start clean before sowing:
- Deep soil cultivation > 10 cm (e.g. ploughing) can reduce weed populations
- Shallow soil cultivation: stimulates weed germination, can be used in false seedbeds

Biological

Biological weed control is the use of an organism or biological process to suppress weed growth.
Commercial products are not available yet, but development in this area is ongoing.

Good to know! Modes of action and HRAC-Codes

What are modes of action? HRAC-codes?

The mode of action is the way in which herbicides control susceptible plants, usally weeds.
It describes the biological process or enzyme that the herbicide interrupts.
Based on their mode of action, herbicides are classified by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC) into the different HRAC groups. Each HRAC Code is represented by a different color and letter/number.*
